Workpackage 5 (WP 5)
Objectives
To conduct additional, in-depth analysis of selected food chains, with a focus on economic relationships and communication, in all participating countries. To investigate, by conducting face-to-face interviews, in more detail important issues which cannot be analysed satisfactorily by means of a standardised cross-country survey. To qualitatively enrich the data collected in earlier working packages and help to further develop their most important findings from the whole project objectives point of view.
Description of work
WP5 will involve the analysis of country-specific issues related to economic relationships and channels of communication in selected commodity chains at national level, and either from a farmer's, a processor's or retailer's perspective. The decision of what issues exactly will be researched will be based on the findings of the above survey and of each country's team's assessment of what they think would be most important from both their country's and an overall EU's perspective. However, country-specific research issues will be agreed in the consortium at the outset of this WP.
In each country, research will focus on three specific cases (chain specific phenomenon) and the research will be based on face-to-face interviews (up to 30 per country; 10 per case).
Examples for such research could be the contractual particularities between a certain commodity's processors and retailers, the state-of-the-art of communication channels in a particular food industry, the implications of communication and information technology for the improvement of communication and co-ordination, the impact of contractual co-ordination on chain relationships, the impact of administered co-ordination (through the power of key players) on chain relationships, the impact of Quality Assurance schemes on economic relationships, the influence of institutional assistance on economic relationships and co-ordination, etc.
Deliverables
Report 5, one section per country (D6), will provide a synthesis of the country-specific analysis, highlighting their importance for the EU as a whole. This information will feed into WP6.
As soon as these results are available, their dissemination will start by making them available to research participants and the consultation panel.
